Staining your wooden fence can add years to its life.
A wooden fence can really enhance the look of your home and yard. Wooden fences are generally more attractive than drab chain-link fences. One of the drawbacks to wooden fences is the maintenance required to keep them looking nice. Wooden fences can begin to fade and show signs of wear after just a few months. One way to spruce up your wooden fence is to apply a good quality stain. A good stain will protect the fence from the elements, as well as help make it look new again. Use a basic pump sprayer to get the job done quickly.
Instructions
1. Use a pressure washer to clean your fence if it is dirty or not newly installed. You do not want to apply your stain to a fence covered with chunks of dirt and mold. If you fence is new, you may not have to clean it first. Allow the fence to dry overnight before applying the stain.
2. Stir the stain with a wooden paint stirrer to mix it properly. Pour the stain into the pump sprayer through a coffee filter. This will help strain out any debris or clumps that may clog the sprayer's nozzle.
3. Place the top on the sprayer. Pump the sprayer the recommended number of times. If your sprayer did not come with instructions, simply pump it until it becomes difficult to pump. You will have enough pressure to spray the stain once it becomes difficult to pump the sprayer.
4. Put on a dust mask and a pair of safety glasses or goggles. You want to avoid inhaling the stain or getting it in your eyes. Sudden wind gusts can cause the stain to fly back and land on your body.
5. Position the sprayer nozzle 10 to 12 inches away from the top of the first fence picket. Press the trigger and at the same time lower the sprayer all the way down the length of the picket. Once you reach the bottom of the picket, raise back up slowly and spray the other portion of the picket until you reach the top. Move to next picket and repeat the process. Pump the sprayer as soon as you notice the width of the stain spray shrinking, indicating that you need more pressure.
6. Stain the rest of the fence side you are on, just as you did the first picket. Re-fill the sprayer with stain if you need to, then stain the other side of the fence. Remember to keep adequate pressure built up in the sprayer by pumping regularly.
7. Allow the stain to dry overnight before you decide if you need to add a second coat. Some stains will change color slightly as they dry, so you need to let it dry before you continue staining.
Tips Warnings
Make sure you buy a deck or fence sprayer, not a smaller garden sprayer. Garden sprayers will not have enough pressure to pump the stain out properly. You can find pump sprayers in most home improvement stores.
