Regular flushing of a Rinnai water heater will ensure plenty of hot water.
It is necessary to flush Rinnai water heaters periodically as part of a regular maintenance schedule to avoid rust, sediment (sand, gravel) and mineral buildup (scale). (See References 1) (See References 2) (See References 3) Flushing extends the life of the appliance. Mineral buildup acts as an insulator keeping the water away from the source of heat. More energy is required to bring the water to an acceptable temperature. The mineral buildup and sediment take up space in the water heater, leaving less room for water. It can also create annoying noises. Contact your local municipal water supply district or health department to determine the hardness of the water in your area. Water heaters used with hard water require more frequent flushing.
Instructions
1. Disconnect the Rinnai water heater from its power source. (See References 4)
2. Fill the pail with four gallons of white vinegar or citric acid. Place the pail near the water heater.
3. Locate valves 1, 2, 3 and 4. Valves 1 and 2 are boiler drain valves, and valves 3 and 4 are ball valves. Close valve 3 and valve 4.
4. Attach the drain hose to valve 1. Attach the pump outlet hose to valve 2. Place the open ends of both hoses into the pail.
5. Open valve 1 and valve 2. Turn on the circulating pump. Circulate the solution in the pail through the water heater for 45 minutes. Turn off the circulating pump. Lift the end of the drain hose (connected to valve 3) out of the pail.
6. Close valve 2. Open valve 4. Valve 3 will remain closed.
7. Drain the cleaning solution from inside the water heater through the drain hose and into a floor drain for five minutes. Close valve 1. Open valve 3. Detach the drain and pump outlet hoses from the valves.
8. Take out the water heater's in-line filter at the cold water inlet. Clean the filter and put it back in place.
9. Reconnect the water heater to the power source.
Tips Warnings
Do not stand in water while disconnecting or reconnecting the water heater from the power source.
