Can pex pipe be used for propane line outside the structure using compression fittings or crimped fitting? I have a leak between the house and the tank and if useable it's alot less than copper. A bomb? How would using pex (plastic create a bomb? In Texas you can use pvc for natural gas run line between the meter and house per Atmos gas inspector. A boring company hit a 1 pvc line going to a friends house causing a leak. the plumber contacted the gas company and they said fix it back with pvc. Go figure. Unless pex is harmed by the gas it is rated for high heat and pressure?Beer 4U2 hose...this has come up once before, bout 6 months back. No one here could believe that PVC or PEX was legal for this application. None of the Pro's here had ever heard of such a thing except by people trying to cheap out. I don't think we have any plumbing/piping experts in TX who post, but maybe someone will try checking some codes. YES, to my knowledge propane and NG can adversely affect plastic piping, since they are both petroleum products. There are flexible plastic products designed for gas piping..thats what they use when running main lines that I've seen, but they are specifically designed for it. In se Tx. It is legal to run gas in pvc, Not a good idea but legal. It has to be steel 3' from the ell coming out of the ground and all steel or copper above ground. Travis Well, there ya go. Pex, I am not sure about that stuff. I will find out. I don't think I would use it. It hasn't been out all that long. How long will it hold up out side ,or under ground? I have heard good and bad things about it. The fittings that are used with it, I don't think would work all that good. I just had to return two valves, because they leaked. The 3rd one did fine. Two things scare me about this thread: The thought that someone would couple a plastic gas line meant for water supply and use it for gas and that texas would use PVC for gas lines, knowing the possibilities of that piping abruptly cracking/leaking when it does break We live in a dangerous world when your neighbor is building a system to supply gas with products never meant for its use. When a house blows up, does damage to your neighbors or possibly injure or kill someone, there's personal responsibility to consider when incorrect piping is used for any reason whatsoever. I've seen far worse, unfortunately. Thanks guys. Great discussion and information. i am a licensed master plumber in TEXAS. we do not allow pex or pvc piping for gas ! what we do allow is steel pipe and a special yellow poly pipe designed for gas usage. the plastic is only allowed under ground as mentioned earlier in this thread this page will tell you about the plastic pipe designed for gas distribution Polyethyline Pipe - Gas Distribution Pipe PMDan....how did I miss the fact you were in TX?
