Handymen do not need a license in Florida
Florida does not require handymen to get a license, but there are restrictions on the services a handyman can perform. If a handyman does work ordinarily performed by a licensed person, criminal prosecution is possible.
Work Done By a Handyman
Florida restricts the type of work a handyman can perform. No electrical, building or plumbing services can be done by a handyman. This was legislated by Florida to keep residents from being scammed by unscrupulous firms after storms.
Business License
A handyman service in Florida does need to have a business license. The first step in receiving a business license is obtaining a fictitious business name. Once the fictitious name has been filed, the individual can go to the county where the work is to be performed and file for a business license. A Florida tax identification number can then be obtained from the Department of Revenue.
Contracting License
A handyman who plans on doing construction-related work as part of his service will have to get a contractor's license. To get a contractor's license, a person has to prove that he went through an apprenticeship program or has the necessary work experience to qualify for an application. Once the application has been filed with the licensing board, it will determine if the individual is qualified to take the state exam. This review process by the licensing board is done through interviews, background checks and verifying the application.
