Hooking up Gas dryer hose
We just purchaed a gas dryer (we had an electric one) There is already a gas hookup here from the previous owners. I purchased a 4' flex hose for the gas supply but it's not going to be long enough to connect to the gas connection on the bottom of the dryer. Lowe's stated the longest hose I can get was 4'..... Not sure if that's the case or what my options are. I believe those flexable gas supply hoses are for stationary appliances such as hot water heaters which do not vibrate or have a tendancy to move. I don't think gas dryers meet this qualification to meet code. I have always use black iron piping consisting of bushing, elbows, a union, short nipples, a gas shutoff and two to three short lengths of pipe to make my connections. This is much safer then a flexable hose. If you new to plumbing work, then get a plumber for your own safety. Check your local code for the flex hose use. In New York, it's common to use flex hoses for ranges and dryers. This will allow the appliance to be move in and out easily to get to the connections. Four feet is the longest usually made. What you will need to do is have the gas line moved closer to the dryer connection. OK I guess that was my question. Is there a limit (like 4') as to how long the flex hose has to be- I know I cannot join 2 pieces of flex hose together so I'm guessing my only recourse is to have someone come in and extend the gas connection lower on the wall. I'm not aware of a limit. Once again, local code prevails. Two flex hoses can be joined together, done right. I am sure some states may allow a flex hose for gas dryer. Michigan allows no more than six feet of copper. Best thing to do is have a plummer run black pipe to code. Then run your copper no more than six feet.
