Salt for Ultima 5000SE water softener

I just moved into a new house with an ultima water softener. The Brine tank does not have any salt in it and the water is currently hard. I am not sure what salt I should use to fill the brine tank. If all that you have is hard water and hope fully reg resin , then rock salt or any other salt will work, no real need for the salt with the iron out in it unless is it way cheaper than rock salt. I suppose 'ULTIMA is a dealership name and not a manufacturer's name. Many companies take valves made be Fleck, Autotrol and others and put their sticker on it. I would recommend a pellet salt, which is cleaner or cube salt (evaporated) which is the cleanest. I find rock salt quite dirty and the brine drum will accummulate dirt, which will need to be cleaned out. Make sure there is water in the base of the drum. After placing one bag of salt in there, wait a couple of hours and put the softener through a manual regeneration. Wait again and repeat. Then flush your hot water tank. You'll find out by then if the softener is working or not.
