The ring bearer is an important part of the traditional wedding ceremony. The ring bearer is a young boy who escorts the flower girl down the aisle. He can also precede the flower girl. His job is an important one -- to carry the rings to the bride and groom. Usually the rings are symbolic and attached to the pillow with a ribbon tie. You can find ring bearer pillows at almost any specialty, crafts or department store. Or, you can make your own using materials that coordinate perfectly with your wedding theme.
The Perfect Pillow
The style of the ring bearer pillow is totally up to you. Traditional pillows are white or ivory with a lace overlay and satin ribbons ties. You can make your pillow following tradition or you customize the design to suit your preferences. If you are planning a modern wedding, substitute the white satin ribbon for a ribbon that matches your wedding colors. Or you can use a satin and lace in a coordinating color. For a themed renaissance wedding, try making a pillow of velvet material in a patchwork quilt pattern. Having a black-and-white wedding? If so, use a black lace overlay on the top of the white satin pillow.
Once you decide on the pillow style, the rest is easy. If you can cut a square and sew a seam, you can make a pillow that is sure to impress. Begin by taking a trip to the fabric store to purchase your materials. You will need satin fabric or the fabric type of your choice for the pillow and lace by the yard. Cover just the top of the pillow with lace or use lace to cover the entire pillow. If you would like your pillow to have a lace edge, purchase enough #xBE; inch wide or larger of pre-gathered lace. Other items you will need include a pillow insert or stuffing, thread, #xBC;-inch satin for the ties and #xBD;-inch satin for the ring bearer to slip his hand through at the bottom. If you'd like to get really fancy, purchase small silk flowers or other embellishments to hand-stitch to the top.
Draw a square on newspaper the size of your pillow to make your pattern. Remember, the larger the pillow the harder it will be for your young ring bearer to balance and carry. A 10-by-10-inch square will create a finished pillow that is 9-by-9 inches. This size will allow for #xBD;-inch seams on all sides. If you are using a pillow insert, make the square pattern 1 inch longer and wider than the insert. Use your pattern to cut two pieces of the fabric. Cut two pieces of lace if you are covering the entire pillow and one piece of lace if you are just covering the top. Before sewing, place the right sides together with the piece of 1/8-inch ribbon sandwiched down the middle of the layers. When you turn the pillow to the right side to stuff the satin handle will be sewn securely in the right position. You can slip-stitch the ribbon on the top to hold the rings. Most importantly, have fun with your project. Make your pillow in the style and color that complements you and your wedding to perfection.
