Knit Slippers For Children

Blend wool and mohair yarn to make soft slippers.

Knitting a pair of slippers for a child is an easy way to provide a thoughtful gift. To make the slippers sturdy, felt the slippers by washing them. Felting makes the slippers thick, strong and waterproof. This pattern makes toddler-sized slippers. If you need a bigger size, add stitches. Felting will shrink the slippers, so bear that in mind when deciding on size.

Instructions

Knitting the Slippers

1. Holding one strand of each yarn together, cast on 30 stitches.

2. Knit back and forth in garter stitch until the work is 6 inches long from the beginning.

3. Knit four stitches, knit two stitches together and repeat to the end of next row. Knit the next row.

4. Knit three stitches, knit two stitches together and repeat to the end of the row. Knit the next row.

5. Knit two stitches, knit two stitches together and repeat to the end of the row. Knit the next row.

6. Knit one stitch, knit two stitches together and repeat to the end of the row. Knit the next row.

7. Knit two stitches together, repeating to the end of the row. Cut a long tail of yarn and pull through the remaining stitches, pulling tight.

8. Create a second slipper using the same pattern.

Finishing the Slippers

9. Sew the toe end together for four inches. Weave the tail into the inside of the slipper.

10. Sew the heel seam up the back and weave the ends into the inside of the slipper.

11. Place both slippers into a pillowcase and put it in the washing machine with towels or jeans. Add a few drops of detergent. Set the washing machine for hot and turn on.

12. Check the slippers at the end of the wash cycle. If they are the size you want, remove them and pull them into the proper shape. If not, run them through the hot cycle again.

13. Stuff plastic bags into the slippers and set them in a warm place to dry.
