Free Instructions on Making Tutus
Tutus are an integral part of the clothing worn by ballet dancers. The tutus were originally designed to enhance the appearance of ballerinas. In some form, tutus have existed in Europe since the medieval times. At the beginning of the 19th century, ballet tutus in the modern form became popular. Although they still retain their traditional appearance, tutus have transitioned from being dresses made of fine muslin that spanned an incredible 16 layers to being made of tulle, which need no more than three layers. It is now relatively simple to make a tutu at home.
Measure
It takes between one and three hours to make your own tutu, and the cost is relatively small. When preparing to make a tutu, start by taking measurements. Measure from the hip down to the knee where the tutu is worn. A wide ribbon will be used in the tutu to hold it together like a tether, so you need to measure around the waste to determine the ribbon size. Leave an inch and a half leeway in the waist measurement as the ribbon will need to be joined together.
Tulle
Next, make the arrangement for the tulle. Since tulle is a stretchy material that shrinks when stitched, you will need tulle that is treble the size of the waist. You will need to make three full layers of tulle, long enough to go around the waist. Cut the tulle in the appropriate sizes so that it can go around the waist and lay these three pieces of tulle on top of each other. Stitch them together along the top.
Sewing
Starting from the center, stitch the tulle going up to the top towards the ribbon you plan to use to tie the tulle around the waist. Hem the three layers of tulle at the center, sewing the ribbon inside the hem so the ribbon is attached and the layers of tulle are attached together. The hem has to go around the ribbon and around the tulle just below it. You also need to stitch along the tulle vertical and perpendicular to the ribbon, sewing the tulle together into a circular shape to go around the waist.
