Arthritis, or inflammation of the joints, is an autoimmune disease. The disease causes the inflammation as a direct result of the body attacking itself due to an overactive immune system. Research has found that certain bacterial antibodies contribute to this form of inflammation, and that consumption of starchy carbohydrates increases the risk. Therefore, decreasing your carbohydrate intake may just make dealing with your arthritic flare-ups less painful.
Instructions
1. Reduce your amount of starchy carbohydrates. The biggest offenders would be potatoes, rice and flour products. Replacing white breads with whole grains can aid in reducing a flare up.
2. Also, take notice of the drinks you consume. Many juices and soft drinks are very high in refined sugars. Replacing these with a low carb drink or even just plain water is helpful.
3. Increase your protein. Meats and cheeses contain very little starchy carbohydrates, if any at all. You will hardly miss your starches by slowly replacing them with a protein. Your body will eventually lose the craving.
4. Choose dark green vegetables over the lighter ones. For instance, carrots are higher in carbs than kale or broccoli.
5. Strawberries and blueberries are lower in carbohydrates than most citrus fruits. Lowering your consumption of oranges and grapefruit and replacing them with berries will lower your risk of an inflammation flare-up.
