Scrap Recycling Art Projects In California

Objects bound for the junk yard yield inspiring avenues for creativity.


A button, a circuit board and a Popsicle stick: are all common objects we throw away or recycle. Yet each of these objects can find its way into creative works of art. California hosts a regionally diverse community of scrap recycling organizations with art affiliations to assist those with creative inclinations convert cast-off trash into treasures.


Art From Scrap


The Art from Scrap Galley hosts a revolving show of works by artists and youth who transform scrap materials into sculptures and wall art. Individuals and businesses of the Santa Barbara community donate clean scrap materials to the Art From Scrap organization, which becomes available for purchase at the Reuse Store. Teachers may gain free access to the materials the center collects for use in the classroom when their school joins the center's School Reuse Materials Program. The center is also a field trip destination for students, and hosts week-long summer camps with a scrap art and environmental sustainability theme.


East Bay Depot For Creative Reuse


The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse aims to divert solid waste to creative repurposing. This East San Francisco Bay organization receives community recognition for its low-cost collection of art and craft materials and its commitment to assisting local teachers with the provision of creative supplies and materials for the classroom.


Haute Trash


Duct tape, cellophane, bubble wrap, garbage bags and other recyclable materials combine to comprise non-traditional fashion ensembles by designers of the Nevada City's Haute Trash organization. The Haute Trash fashion show travels to the neighboring states of Oregon and Washington, and seeks to educate audiences on the importance of recycling reusable materials.


Scroungers' Center for Reusable Art Parts -- SCRAP


The Scroungers' Center for Reusable Art Parts, or SCRAP, collects reusable materials from the San Francisco community in a 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse, and maintains an on-site workshop space for art education and creation for people of all ages. SCRAP also hosts a reuse art exhibition, and offers teachers and artists free or low-cost materials for art classes or home use.
