Remove Metal Plates On Legs

Metal plates are used to hold furniture legs in place. They are placed on each corner of the bottom of a piece of furniture, such as a chair or sofa, and the furniture leg screws into the metal plate. Removing the metal plate that holds the leg in place is a relatively simple process requiring only a few tools. You can complete this project without assistance in little time.

Instructions

1. Turn the piece of furniture upside down. Make sure the bottom of the furniture faces up so that you can work on the legs of the item.

2. Unscrew the legs from the metal plates. Furniture legs that are attached to plates have screw-in tops that are part of the leg. Grasp the furniture leg firmly and turn counterclockwise to unscrew it from the metal plate.

3. Remove the screws from the metal plate with a screwdriver if you are replacing the metal plates on the furniture. Most plates are connected to the furniture with four screws.

Tips Warnings

Some metal plates on furniture are T-nut plates. T-nuts are installed with corner blocks built in on the bottom of the furniture. These types of metal plates lock into place by grabbing into the wood. They are permanently attached, as they basically grind into the wood and become part of the structure. To remove these types of plates, go to a professional furniture restorer for assistance.

Furniture legs with screw tops built into the leg can be made of wood or metal. In older furniture, the metal screw tops may be difficult to unscrew. If this happens, spray an oil lubricant made for metal into the plate where the leg is attached. Allow the lubricant to work -- which can take a few minutes or a few hours -- then attempt to unscrew the leg again.
