Get Petroleum Smell Out Of Auto Carpet

Car

The smell of petroleum can be extremely strong. The problem is that the smell will not fade quickly and will require action on your part. Many people end up with a headache if they breathe in the petroleum smell for too long. Here are some great ways to remove the petroleum smell from your auto carpet if you accidentally spill some gas in there.

Instructions

1. Clean up the petroleum first. This will help with the odor, but won't completely eliminate it. If you got the petroleum on your floor mats, hang them out on a clothes line when it is suppose to rain. If you got the gas elsewhere, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet. Let it sit overnight and then vacuum it up. Then scrub the area with hot water and dish soap, and let it dry.clean.

2. Spray Fabreeze directly on the carpet. Use slightly more than you would on your couch or the carpet in your house. Let it sit for a few hours and repeat. It may take three or four cycles to begin to remove all of the petroleum smell.

3. Buy a bottle of Prosolve Carpet Cleaner (see Resources below). Thoroughly spray the area of your carpet that got the petroleum on it. Wait 15 to 20 minutes and then lay some rags over the spot. Press to soak up the liquid, but don't scrub. Leave your car doors open for a few hours to air dry.

4. Purchase a cheap can of coffee. Make sure it gets ground up before you use it. Sprinkle the grounds all over the carpet. Leave them there for 2 to 3 days. You can step on them and move them around with your shoes. Then vacuum them all up. Your car will no longer smell like petroleum, and will smell like coffee. If you don't like the coffee smell, wash the carpet with some dish soap and hot water and it will come right out.

5. Fill the bottom of a glass bowl with vanilla extract. Set it in the car near the carpet that got the petroleum spilled on it. Leave it there for 24 hours and it will eat up the gas odor. This will only work if you first clean the area.

6. Pour rubbing alcohol all over the area and open your car doors so that it can dry out and evaporate. This method is easy to do and is perfect for anyone on a budget.

Tips Warnings

Add vinegar to your dish soap and hot water when you scrub up the petroleum. Vinegar is known for removing strong odors. You can always hire a professional if you don't want to do the work to remove the odor yourself.

Don't ignore the smell. It will not go away on its own.
