Insulate Mobile Home Walls

Insulate Mobile Home Walls

Insulation is essential to keep your home warm. A house or mobile home that is not well insulated will leak warm air, let in cold air and cost more to heat. With the right supplies you can replace or add to the insulation in your mobile home.

Instructions

1. Use a claw hammer to remove the finishing nails that hold the paneling to the wall. If the wallboard is held on with screws then use a cordless drill to remove them. Use a pry bar to get underneath the paneling, between the board and the stud, to pry the board off.

2. Use the claw hammer or cordless drill to remove any nails or screws that stick out from the exposed studs. If any protruding nails or screws are in the studs, the new wallboard, paneling, drywall, etc., will not lay flat.

3. Measure the width in inches between studs using a tape measure. Measure the height of the wall in feet; this will determine what type of insulation you should use. Use R11 or R13 sized insulation. (Depending on how far apart your studs are, R11 is less wide than R13 and is more likely to fit older mobile homes; R13 is wider and best for newer mobile homes with 2 by 6 wall studs.) Divide the length of the insulation roll by the wall height, to calculate the total amount of insulation you will need.

4. Roll out the insulation, paper side up. Measure the insulation with a tape measure and use a straight edge and marker to draw a line across the width of the insulation at the top wall height.

5. Use a utility knife to cut the insulation along the marked line. Beginning at an edge, apply pressure and slice the insulation directly on the line. Repeat if needed to fully cut through the thickness of the insulation.

6. Hang the first piece of insulation between studs by folding out the paper flaps on each side and securing to the studs. Using a staple gun and #189;-inch staples, staple every 4 inches vertically down each stud.

7. Cut the next piece of insulation to size and hang. Do this until the wall is fully insulated, overlapping the paper flaps. Apply duct tape along all seams where flaps are secured and meet, to block out any air that could possibly get through the seams.
