Take 5htp Supplements

5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is a building block of serotonin, a neurotransmitter. Low levels of serotonin can lead to anxiety, compulsive eating, depression, headaches, fibromyalgia or restless leg syndrome. As 5-HTP is believed to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier, it can help boost levels of serotonin in the brain. 5-HTP is made from the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia, and is available in capsules or as a tincture.

Instructions

1. Contact an integrative physician or other health professional trained in herbal medicine if you are interested in taking 5-HTP to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression or insomnia. A qualified medical professional can determine if you are a good candidate for taking 5-HTP alone or with other herbal supplements.

2. Do not be cavalier about taking herbal supplements. Educate yourself by reading the general cautions below from the National Centers for Alternative Complementary Medicine (NCCAM) at the Instititues of Health (NIH). You are mistaken if you believe that all plant- or herb-derived medicines are “safer” or “less toxic” than drugs.

3. Inform your doctor if you are already taking other herbal supplements or prescription medicines. There are contraindications for taking drugs and certain herbal supplements that can lead to serious harm or death. It is best to avoid alcohol if you are taking herbal supplements.

4. Purchase herbal supplements only from a reputable source that is from an established company. Ask your physician or herbalist to refer you to brands that have tested herbs. Do not simply buy the cheapest product online, as potencies vary greatly.

5. Proceed with caution. If you have not taken herbal supplements before, with your doctor’s guidance, start with the lowest dosage. It may take several weeks for you to notice its effects. Do not mix drugs and herbal supplements.
