Prognathism Jaw Pain

Prognathism Jaw Pain

Mandibular prognathism is a malformation of the jaw where the lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw, more commonly referred to as an under-bite. It can sometimes be accompanied by pain, though pain is rare.

Causes

Some people are born with prognathism.

According to Rachel M. Lewis, M.D. (Columbia University), prognathism may also occur due to inherited conditions such as Crouzon Syndrome and basal cell nevus syndrome.

If prognathism develops in childhood or adulthood (appears where it was not before), it may indicate serious underlying conditions.

Pain

Pain is not generally associated with prognathism in and of itself. However, prognathism can lead to temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD), which can be painful. Any jaw pain should be investigated by a dentist or physician.

Treatment

Treatment varies according to the severity of the condition. Minor protrusions can be corrected with expanders, sometimes called "head gear" by the wearers. The expanders have a turnkey that can gradually straighten the alignment of the jaw.

More serious cases must be treated with surgery.

Prevention

While prognathism is often genetically carried or a product of illness, environment can play a role as well. Thumb sucking, excessive pacifier use or continual pressure from the tongue on the lower jaw can, over time, misalign the teeth.

Tip

The ideal age for prognathism treatment is approximately eight years old as the jaw is fully formed but still malleable.
