Natural Treatment For Psoriasis Of The Scalp

Scalp psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious, condition of the skin affecting one in 50 people worldwide. Scalp psoriasis is associated with raised, thickened, scaly white or red patches of skin covering the scalp. The cause of psoriasis is unclear but factors such as genetics, stress, skin trauma and infections have been linked to its appearance. Although there is currently no cure for psoriasis, certain natural remedies have been known to assist in managing the condition.

Coal Tar Shampoo

According to researchers at the Mayo Clinic, coal tar is the oldest known treatment for psoriasis. The strong odor and staining associated with the use of pure coal tar make using the shampoo more appealing for some individuals. This product is known to reduce scaling and itching associated with scalp psoriasis when used frequently. Shampoos containing coal tar can be found at your local grocer and drugstore.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is derived from the leaves of the aloe vera plant. Aloe vera cream may reduce redness, itching and scaling associated with scalp psoriasis when applied topically. This cream may need to be used several times a day over the course of a few weeks to see results. It can be purchased at your local health food store. Pure aloe vera gel may also be used and can be purchased from your neighborhood grocer.

Fish Oil

Omega-3 fatty acids taken daily may reduce redness and swelling associated with scalp psoriasis. Taking just three grams of fish oil per day is regarded as safe by the Mayo clinic, and may help reduce psoriasis symptoms.

Neem Oil

Neem oil is a natural oil, derived from the Neem tree found in India. Neem oil acts as an emollient to moisturize dry cracked skin associated with scalp psoriasis. Neem oil may soothe and decrease the redness associated with the condition. Neem oil also has natural antibacterial properties associated with clearing up skin infections and works to reduce reoccurrence. Neem oil can be purchased at your neighborhood health food store. Some shampoos containing neem oil may also help to alleviate psoriasis of the scalp symptoms.
