Neck Exercises For Tension Headaches

Some yoga moves can help relieve tension headaches.


If you are one of the many people that carries their stress in their head and neck area, you are probably no stranger to tension headaches. Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to relieve tension headaches, including some head and neck exercises.








Yoga Exercises


There are some simple stretches that you can do to help relieve tension headaches. This is a five-step process to help stretch out your neck muscles and relieve some of the tension that is causing your headaches.


Start with your head up straight. Bend your head forwards and drop your chin to your chest. Then, lift your head back up straight. Next, bend your head to the right so that your ear is towards your shoulder. Then, lift your head back up. Lean your head to your left shoulder so that your ear is toward your shoulder. Bring your head back up. Then lean, your head back for a second and straighten it back up.


Finally, lean your head forwards and then roll it around from right to left in a complete circle. Bring your head back up. Then, lower your head again and roll your head in a circle from left to right.


Focused Movement


There is a focused movement that you can do to help relieve the tension in your head, neck and face muscles. To do this movement, put your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Then touch your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. You can do this several times to help relieve the tension in your face, head and neck.


Behind the Back Stretch


There is a stretch that you can do do help correct your poor posture that is contributing to your tension headaches. You can either sit or stand to do this stretch.








Hook your arms behind the chair then lean forwards, sticking your chest out. Pull your shoulder blades together until you can feel it in your shoulder joints. Hold this stretch for three full minutes. It will really loosen up your back muscles and will increase blood flow to your neck and head.


Other Ways to Get Rid of Tension Headaches


If you want to get rid of tension headaches you need to improve your posture. Try yoga or Pilates. These are both excellent at correcting posture and releasing tension.


You also should reduce stress or at least manage it better. Deal with your stress instead of carrying it in your head and neck. Make sure to exercise frequently and eat a healthy diet. These things help your body deal with stress better and should help put an end to tension headaches.
