Natural Treatment For Canine Cushing'S Disease

Cushing's disease commonly affects older dogs.

Cushing's disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism, is a common condition in older dogs. It is caused by over production of adrenal corticosteroid hormones. Approximately 85 percent of cases result from a tumor in the pituitary gland. Canine Cushing's can lead to heart disease, diabetes and problems with the dog's nervous system. However, natural treatment options are available to ease symptoms and impede progression.

Causes

Older dogs are common candidates for Cushing's disease. A benign tumor in the pituitary gland is the most common cause of disease. As a result of the tumor, the pituitary gland excessively secretes ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone). In turn, this triggers excessive release of cortisol. In a smaller number of cases, an adrenal tumor is responsible for the excess secretion of cortisol. Malignant tumors are present in 50 percent of these cases and are prone to metastasizing (spreading) to the lung and liver. Overmedication with cortisone, for treating allergies, is a third cause of Cushing's disease in dogs.

Clinical Symptoms

Cushing's disease causes excess thirst, hunger and urination. Obesity as well as an enlarged abdomen result from Cushing's disease. Muscle weakness may be observed as well. Dogs with Cushing's display thinning hair or patchy hair loss and their head appears skull-like. Skin may become hyperpigmented and develop calcified skin bumps. Left untreated, dogs are prone to excessive infections, pancreatitis, kidney failure, seizures and nervous disorders.

Behavioral Symptoms

Dogs with Cushing's pant incessantly.

Dogs with Cushing's pant excessively and incessantly. They are lethargic all the time and show reduced interest in spending time with their owner or other social activities. Refusal to participate in normal or daily activities may indicate the dog is suffering from Cushing's.

Diet Change

A raw diet is recommended to improve overall health.

A raw diet is highly recommended for dogs with Cushing's. It provides high-quality nutrients that are normally cooked out of processed foods. In addition, a raw diet is void of harmful grains, additives and fillers found in commercial foods. Canine health improvements may be seen with only diet modification.

Homeopathic Herbs

Dandelion is a common ingredient in tinctures developed for treatment.

Dandelion helps normalize adrenal function. It works as a tonic for the liver and kidneys as well. It reduces inflammation and provides vitamins and minerals required for hair growth. Burdock cleanses and detoxifies the tissues and eliminates unwanted substances from the body. It also prevents diabetes by balancing the blood sugar levels. Astragalus strengthens the immune system, regulates blood pressure and blood sugar levels and promotes adrenal balance. Other herbs such as kelp, nettle, rosehips, wormwood, milk thistle, garlic, clivers, clover and apple cider vinegar can be used under professional supervision.

Homeopathic Substances

Homeopathic treatments should be used under medical supervision.

Arsenicum treats excessive thirst and urination. Hepar Sulph treats infections. It also heals wounds and irritated skin. Mercurius aids with thirst, irritability, bladder infections and diarrhea. Sulfur reduces thirst, aids in digestion and improves skin condition. Formic acid is effective in early stages of disease and restoring health and coat condition. Supplement thyroid to return thyroid levels to normal. Homeopathic pituitary aids in balancing the action of the pituitary gland. Homeopathic treatments should be used under medical supervision and monitored closely.
