Avoid Alcohol


Whether you are a former alcoholic, are too young to drink, or simply want to stay away from alcohol for your health, avoiding alcohol in this day and age can be difficult. Alcohol and its uses are found everywhere from commercials to billboards, and avoiding alcohol means you will have to disconnect yourself from some of the associations as well as the use. Avoiding alcohol takes perseverance and dedication.


Instructions








1. Stay away from bad influences. Peer pressure can often bend the will of the strongest person, and when you find yourself in a situation where your friends are drinking, it will be harder for you to say no. To lower the instances of being pressured to drink, tell your friends your reasons for avoiding drinking. Those who still constantly tempt you with a sip may not truly be your friends and are bad influences.


2. Find a new scene. If your favorite pastime was going bar- and club-hopping, then it may be time for you to find a new scene altogether. It will help you avoid alcohol if you find something you truly enjoy doing outside of drinking. Temptation will often rear its ugly head in places that have a bar setting, so in order to meet your goal, finding an alternate activity will help you succeed.


3. Have a virgin drink instead. If you are unable to avoid being in an atmosphere that serves drinks or your will is strong enough to resist alcohol, then having a favorite virgin standby may be an option. Having a virgin drink will help you to blend in and also avoid the possibility of someone buying you an alcoholic drink unsolicited. Beyond these reasons, you can still feel you are a part of special events without the use of alcohol or feeling like you are stunting someone else's fun by not drinking. Bring your own nonalcoholic beverages.


4. Join a supportive group. Everyone who drinks is not an alcoholic, but going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings may help provide you with the support you need to keep avoiding alcohol. If joining this organization is not the right option for you, then there are other places to seek support. Getting therapy or counseling from a positive-oriented group at church or a local community center will help to refocus your energy in another direction. You may also want to seek the help of a friend if none of these is available to you as well, but ensure that if this is your route, then the friend is someone whom you can trust and who takes this seriously.


5. Take fate into your own hands. When you have to go to a party where alcohol is being served, try to arrive late and leave early to give yourself less of a chance to consume alcohol. Be a social butterfly when you get there as this will help you to keep your mind off of the alcohol while socializing. If you begin to think about drinking, simply take fate into your own hands by leaving. Don't be afraid to say no to others and especially yourself. You can also think one step ahead of situations by not bringing cash or credit cards to places that make you pay for alcohol, so you will not be able to pay for it even if you wanted to.
