Throw A Southernthemed Party

Have your guests dress the part for a Southern-style party.

Thinking of the theme for your next get-together? Try going Southern. Using a region as party inspiration is always fun, and whether you actually live in the South or not, this is a great idea for many reasons: it's laid back and informal, it keeps costs down, and it's very simple to pull off. Use a few creative ideas to make your Southern-themed party a huge success.

Instructions

1. Deck out the location with cowboy flags, coils of rope, hanging lanterns and colored kerchiefs tied to chair backs. Set out accents from a party supply store: plastic spurs, tumbleweed, saddles and branding irons. Play country music. Dress tables with red-checked tablecloths and use bunches of fresh-picked flowers in mason jars as inexpensive centerpieces.

2. Play trivia with facts about the South or hold a scavenger hunt in which party attendees search for item s you hid beforehand such as belt buckles, tins of chewing tobacco, bonnets, and magnets that say Yeehaw! and key chains that say Hey y'all!

3. Play a classic Southern movie such as Steel Magnolias, Gone with the Wind, Fried Green Tomatoes or Driving Miss Daisy.

4. Bob for apples and play horseshoes. If you have a bit more to spend, hire a dance instructor to teach everyone to line dance or square dance.

5. Feed your guests Southern style. Serve a traditional menu such as smothered pork chops, green beans, cornbread, macaroni and cheese and banana pudding, or fried chicken, collard greens, rolls, mashed potatoes and peach cobbler. Another option is a barbecue menu that includes barbecued meats, potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, Texas toast and sweet potato pie and pecan pie. Instead of wine and champagne, make Southern mixed drinks such as mint Juleps, or set out washtubs or buckets full of ice and beer.

Tips Warnings

Let your guests become part of the decor by inviting them to dress in jeans, denim skirts, vests, bandannas and cowboy boots and hats.

Keep costs low by turning the party into a potluck and having attendees bring a dish.
