Adjust A Moen Shower Valve For A Leak

When your Moen shower leaks, the problem is in the cartridge. This is the part that controls water flow into the shower. It's a ceramic disc and it sits inside the body of the faucet. In some cases the cartridge wears down, causing a leak. In other cases, the cartridge is just not set properly inside the faucet. If the cartridge was not properly installed, a fast adjustment will solve your leak problem.

Instructions

1. Shut the water off by closing the main inlet valve to the home. This valve is on your water pipe leading to the water heater.

2. Take off the handle to the Moen faucet. Unscrew the small screw at the handle's base with an Allen wrench. Then slide the handle off by pulling it backwards.

3. Remove the escutcheon plate, which is the round shower trim or back plate, by taking out the two screws on either side of the faucet with a screwdriver. Remove the handle adapter by unscrewing the mounting screw, and slide off the stop tube, which is the round sleeve over the cartridge.

4. Pry out the cartridge clip with a pair of needle-nose pliers and inspect it for damage or wear. Take out the cartridge and inspect this damage. If the cartridge appears worn, clogged or damaged, replace it with a new one. If not, set it back inside the faucet body. The cartridge must lie flush in the faucet. If it does not, remove the cartridge, clean out the faucet head and reseat the cartridge.

5. Install the cartridge clip in the proper guide slots on the faucet body. Use a new cartridge clip if the old one is broken. Replace the stop tube and adapter. Reinstall the escutcheon plate and tighten both screws. Reattach the handle and operate the faucet.
