Recovery From Neurological Disorders

There are many types of neurological diseases as well as medical conditions that cause neurological deficits. When the neurological system stops functioning properly, it can have an effect on the entire body. We need our nervous systems to help control most every aspect of the body from breathing to swallowing, walking and talking. Many times a full recovery from a neurological disorder is not attainable. Instead you have to treat the symptoms and work to eliminate the source of the nerve damage.

Medications

There are many medications geared toward treating damaged nerves to help them heal. When inflammation is decreased, pain is decreased as well and nerves have a greater chance of recovering. Lyrica and neurontin are two medications that work in this way. These two are also anti-seizure medications along with keppra, topomax and dilantin. These medications do not cure the problem that causes the seizures, instead they help to control seizures so that no further damage is done to the nervous system.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is an excellent way to help heal the body. If you suffer from a neurological disorder, your doctor may order physical therapy treatments to help the body learn function again at its optimum. Physical therapy for many neurological disorders is in-depth, and is many times a long-term process. Physical therapy for neurological disorders can include balance therapy, coordination training, stretching exercises, aerobic exercises and strength building exercises. Building good muscle strength and control is important for recovery from a neurological disorder.

Alternative Treatments

Alternative treatments are non-conventional medical treatments that can be beneficial to some people. Acupuncture is a non-conventional treatment that has shown promise for neurological recovery. Many times acupuncture is used in accordance with other, conventional treatments.

Herbs are also a non-conventional treatment. There are many herbs that can help relieve pain, help with nerve inflammation and soothe the nerves. Saint-John's-wort and vervain are nervous system relaxants that can help your nerves recover from damage.
