Topical Treatment For Hives

Hives can be a frustrating skin condition. Luckily, relief from the itchiness and other symptoms of hives can be found in a number of over-the-counter topical treatments and home remedies.

What Are Hives?

Hives are swollen, itchy, reddish bumps that appear anywhere on the skin. They are usually caused by an allergic reaction, when the body releases histamines as a result of direct skin contact with or ingestion of an allergen.

Instant Relief

Calamine lotion is a creamy over-the-counter ointment containing zinc oxide and iron oxide. It can provide instant relief from itching caused by hives.

Antihistamine Cream

Topical creams containing antihistamine agents block the adverse affects of histamines on cells. Applying the cream can provide relief but does not treat the underlying cause of the problem.

Steroid Treatment

Corticosteroid creams like hydrocortisone and triamcinolone can be prescribed to reduce inflammation and swelling. Your doctor will decide on the correct treatment and dosage.

Home Remedies

The simplest way to reduce the swelling and itching is to apply an ice pack or cold compress to the affected area. A paste made from water and cream of tartar can also be an effective substitute for calamine lotion.
