Pour Water Over Hot Stones To Make Steam

You can create steam by pouring cold water over heated stones.

The benefits of using a steam room or a steam bath are well documented and range from relaxing tired and sore muscles, improved circulation and detoxifying the body through sweating. Heating stones and pouring water on them creates the steam. Altering the amount of water used and the temperature of the heated stones allows the user to control the heat and the steam in the steam room, making each session personalized to suit the user's needs.

Instructions

Stones

1. Look for stones that are similar in size. Selecting stones of similar size and weight will ensure that they heat evenly and produce steam approximately the same amount of time. It'll reduce the amount of time spent reheating the stones.

2. Inspect the stones for cracks or chips. Reject any defective stones. When heated and cooled quickly, stones with cracks or chips can shatter, possibly causing serious injury.

3. Use only stones that are completely dry and haven't been exposed to water for several days. Heating stones that have water inside causes the water to expand. This can cause the stone to explode, exposing those nearby to injury.

Heat

4. Build a fire to heat the stones. Select an area away from buildings and landscape.

5. Create a fire ring to contain the fire using large stones placed in a circle. The fire ring should be on dirt, not grass or concrete.

6. Start a fire and place the stones in the fire to heat up. Allow the stones to remain in the fire until they're red hot.

7. Use fireplace tongs or barbecue tongs to move the hot stones from the fire. Place them in a pile in the location to be filled with steam.

Water

8. Fill a large bucket with cold water. The colder the water, the more steam will be produced when poured on the heated stones.

9. Use a large ladle to transfer the water from the bucket to the stones. The ladle should not only hold a good amount of water, it also needs to have a long handle to avoid being burned by the heat of the stones.

10. Drizzle water over the stones slowly until steam appears. Increase the amount of water poured over the stones to make the desired amount of steam.
