Safety Rules With Power Tools

The use or power tools in the workplace and in the home makes various tasks much easier. These tools also make it possible for a person to complete tasks that at one time were not feasible for an individual to attempt. While these tools offer convenience and time savings, they also present unique safety requirements and considerations.

Eye Protection

When using any power tool, you should always wear protective eye-wear. This can be in the form of safety glasses, goggles or a full face shield. Each day there are approximately 2,000 eye injuries in the United States, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. A great many of these injuries could be prevented by the proper use of eye protection.

Hearing Protection

When using power tools such as Skil saws, jig saws, routers, sanders or grinders, you should wear hearing protection. These tools generate enough noise volume to potentially cause hearing loss. Simple ear plugs are inexpensive and readily available. You may also use protective ear phones which will block even more of the dangerous noise levels.

Electrical Safety

Keep general electrical safety rules in mind when using power tools. Never carry the tool by its power cord. Never use a tool that has a damaged power cord or plug. Do not yank or pull on the power cord to unplug it from the outlet. Never use a tool with a defective switch or control. Unplug all tools that are not currently in use.

Guards

Make certain all guards are in place and operating properly before using any power toll. These guards will protect you from moving parts as well as flying debris such as wood or metal splinters. On some tools, guards need to be adjusted for each application. Take the time to properly set all guards in place prior to using the tool.

Basic Safety

Store power tools in a dry place. Check each tool after use to be certain the power cord and all guards are in good condition before storing the tool. Do not use electrical power tools in damp or wet conditions. Keep your work area well-lighted at all times. Read the operations manual before using the tool for the first time. Do not modify the tool in any manner; use it only for its intended purpose.
