Ear Wax Candle Directions

Ear candles are used to clean out wax buildup in the ears.

Ear candling is a folk medicine practice, sometimes called ear "coning," that is used to remove wax and toxins from the ears, according to Crystal Links. According to the paper "Ear Candling" (Breese, 2005), this treatment can help people who suffer from middle-ear infections, tinnitus, labyrinthitis and wax buildup. The human ear contains a protective coating of wax, or cerumen, which is removed during this process and then takes 24 hours to be replaced by the body.

Instructions

1. Have the person getting the ear candling sit in an upright position, head titled sideways, or lie on the floor or a bed with a pillow supporting the head.

2. Cut a hole in the center of the paper plate and place the ear candle in it. Put the end of the ear candle into the ear, just far enough that it comfortably stays in place. The person may also want to keep a hand on the candle to hold it steady.

3. Light the candle. As the candle burns down, clip off the top at about the 1-inch mark. To do this, hold the bowl of water next to the candle and then clip the burnt part of the candle off into it. The person being treated should hear popping and crackling in the ear and may feel a warm sensation, according to Head To Toe Wellness Center's owner and operator, Dawn Davarn.

4. Pull out the candle when it has gotten down to 1 or 1/12 inches in length and dip it in the bowl of water to extinguish the flame. Cut open the candle, if desired, to show the person how much wax has been pulled out. Repeat the process for the other ear.
