Create Invoices In Microsoft Word 2010

Selling something can be the start of a successful venture, but the sale is not complete until you receive payment for the product or service. To help speed that process along, take advantage of one of the Microsoft Word 2010 invoice templates. Invoices help you prepare a professional looking request for payment, letting you keep a saved soft-copy in a Word document folder and print out a hard-copy for mailing as desired. Personalize Word's templates to fit your organization's requirements, and start getting paid.

Instructions

1. Open Microsoft Word. Click the File tab and then click New. Click the Invoices button.

2. Double-click one of the category file folders, such as Bills of Sale. Scroll through the options Word offers for templates. Keep in mind that you're able to change all of the wording, lines, graphics and colors on the template to suit your requirements. Double-click a template. After a few moments, it opens in a new Word window.

3. Scroll through the template to get a sense of its placeholder and generic text. Highlight a section of text, and type directly over it to add your own details, such as the remittance address.

4. Highlight and type over any lines in the template for generic products and pricing, replacing them with your own items sold or services charged.

5. Highlight and type over any lines in the template about payment rules, such as whether you accept checks, your 30-60-90 day policies on finance charges and any other information.

6. Format the invoice text to suit your preferences -- for example, to match your company colors or fonts -- by highlighting the text and clicking the Home tab. Use the font, color and sizing options to give the text a new look.

7. Click the Insert tab and then click Picture. Browse to a copy of the company logo, and double-click it to add it to the invoice. Drag it into place, such as at the top-left of the invoice.

8. Click the File tab and then click Save As. Type a name for the invoice, such as the customer's last name and the date of the invoice, and click the Save button.

Tips Warnings

Users aren't restricted to selecting one of Word's invoice templates. If you prefer to start from scratch, simply use the page Word opens -- a blank 8.5-inch by 11-inch document -- and add elements required for the invoice, such as a logo and item names.
