Build A Foxhole

You can build a foxhole in which little children can play soldiers or so big children can avoid getting hit by paintballs. The military has perfected the skill of foxhole-building with the serious goal of saving the lives of personnel.

Instructions

Plan to Build the Foxhole

1. Consider the terrain where you will dig. Think about digging the foxhole into the side of a hilly, or within a mountainous or terraced area.

2. Find a place in which you can dig relatively easily. Look for a surface already cratered, not too rocky and soft enough to get a shovel into the dirt, but not so soft that the foxhole might collapse.

3. Keep tactical goals and the battle strategy in mind when you decide how and where you will build the foxhole.

4. Determine how many people will occupy the space.

5. Make a narrow trench leading to a drainage hole for water to collect.

6. Camouflage the open hole with material from the immediate area for additional covering.

7. Line the foxhole with sandbags to lend it greater stability for long-term use. Place sandbags on the top edge of the hole to make it higher and give you added protection.

Choose an Appropriate Size and Shape

8. Decide if one or two people will use the foxhole to determine the appropriate width.

9. Build a two-person hole if you're under threat by the enemy. One person will guard while the other person digs.

10. Use a two-person hole if you need to take turns guarding and sleeping. Two people can also share supplies, such as blankets.

11. Shape the foxhole round or oval.

12. Dig deep enough to hide the top of your head when you are sitting down and wide enough to stretch your legs out in front of you. Plan to sleep sitting up in a foxhole.
