What Are The Treatments For Joint Pain In Lupus

Lupus was named after the wolf

Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that afflicts many parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys. Because of its similar symptoms with other diseases, it is often misdiagnosed. Arthritis and lupus both leave their victims with inflammation of the joints and muscles.

Many of the medications prescribed for one of the diseases can be used in treatment of the other.

Rheumatologist

Doctors who treat lupus can treat different aspects of the symptoms. A rheumatologist is a medical specialist who specifically treats the muscles and joints. Any medication that is prescribed needs to be ordered by a rheumatologist. Depending on factors such as your age, general health, lifestyle and symptoms, your doctor will design a plan for your treatment and recovery.

Corticosteroids

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved corticosteroids for the treatment of lupus. These steroids block the production of postaglandins which cause inflammation. The downside is that they impede the functioning of the white blood cells which help the immune system.

Prednisone, prednisolone

In the mid 1960s, the Schering Corporation introduced prednisone and prednisolone under the brand names Meticorten and Meticortelone, respectively. These synthetic steroids repress the adrenals. There are now generic versions of these available from other manufacturers. In addition to their ability to reduce inflammation, they are effective at fighting tumors.

Hydroxychloroquine

This drug is widely used in the treatment of malaria and is also used to combat inflammation. Doctors prescribe it for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The drug prevents the break down of the red blood cells and protects the hemoglobin. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1955.

Aspirin

For general pain relief and to reduce inflammation, aspirin is an easy to acquire remedy. No prescription is needed and it is highly effective in treatment of muscle aches and pains. Along with other medications, aspirin is a good treatment for lupus symptoms.
