Safety vests
, also known as reflective vests, have multiple purposes and are used to save human lives from unforeseen accidents. They come in bright reflective colors that are seen at night and times of low visibility, such as storms and fog. Reflective vests are recommended--and even required--for outdoor activities and some jobs.
Worker Safety
Safety vests are commonly found at construction sites. School crossing guards, firefighters and police officers also wear safety vests.
Colors
Safety vests are available in an assortment of bright colors for increased visibility. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) have established guidelines on which vest colors are approved for construction, emergency response and highway workers.
Outdoor Activity
Safety vests are not just for work-related activities. Wear them when running, walking or engaging in a range of other outdoor activities that require high visibility, such as hunting.
Cost
As of 2009, safety vests range from a few dollars to more than $50, depending upon the style and design.
Standards
The ANSI and ISEA set standards to ensure vests can be easily removed. Velcro instead of zippers, and breakaway features are two of the required elements for public safety personnel.
