Prepare For Meditation

Preparing for meditation can be just as important as the actual meditation. The right atmosphere—chair, candles, incense—can determine whether or not your quiet time of contemplation is successful, or whether it is filled with distractions. Careful, thoughtful preparation of your meditation space will insure that your 20 to 30 minutes of meditation is not a wasted effort. Here is prepare for meditation.

Instructions

1. Make yourself comfortable. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. If your clothing is too tight, you will have trouble concentrating on your meditation. You will also have trouble taking the deep breaths necessary to lull you into a deep meditative state. Wear sweats or pajamas.

2. Wait at least 20 minutes after a meal to meditate. Digestive processes can interfere with your meditation.

3. Find a quiet space where you are not likely to be disturbed for a while. Turn off your television, cell phone and pager.

4. Dim the lights. Turn off any overhead lights. Harsh lights make it difficult to meditate. Close the curtains or blinds.

5. Light one or two candles.

6. Light an incense stick.

7. Hold an amethyst crystal in your right hand. This will help center your meditation.

8. Sit down in a padded, comfortable chair. Make sure this chair is not confining. You can also sit on a cushion on the floor or on a love seat. Lean your head back and close your eyes.

9. Let go of your cares. If you are upset or excited about something, resolve to totally forget about it for the next 20 minutes. Such emotions will distract you from the peace and calm that meditation bestows.

10. Start breathing slowly and deeply. Focus on each breath as it enters and leaves your lungs. Feel how your body starts to relax a little more with each breath you take.

11. Slip into a meditative state, allowing your mind to clear naturally. If thoughts start to intrude, focus on your breath again.
