A chiropractor makes an adjustment.
Many people suffer from injuries related to the back and spine. While some visit medical doctors, others prefer the chiropractic approach to health. Chiropractors apply a nonsurgical, drug-free treatment approach, such as manipulating the spine. Chiropractors also educate and encourage patients to eat better, exercise and lower their stress. Many chiropractors own their own practice, while some are part of a group practice. If you are interested in becoming a successful chiropractor, find out what it takes to become one.
Instructions
1. Apply for college courses. Admission into a chiropractic program requires two to four years of undergraduate education. Applicants must have a minimum of 90 semester hours leading toward a bachelor's degree. Required courses include biology; organic and inorganic chemistry; physics; psychology; English; and social sciences or humanities. Many applicants have a bachelor's degree.
2. Apply for and attend a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that the Council on Chiropractic Education has accredited 16 chiropractic programs. Chiropractic programs are composed of 4,200 hours of classroom study, laboratory and clinical experience. The first two years usually consist of class and lab work in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, public health and biochemistry. The remaining two years include courses in spinal adjustment, manipulation and clinical experience.
3. Take the licensing examination. Licensing requirements depend on each individual state. Therefore, chiropractors can only practice within the state that they are licensed in. Most state boards require a test administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE). According to the NBCE, there are three parts to the examination, as well as optional exams in physiotherapy and acupuncture to specialize in an area.
4. Create a plan toward chiropractic success. In the "15 Secrets to Becoming a Successful Chiropractor," Dr. John Reizer discusses strategies to becoming a successful chiropractor. Some pointers include creating realistic personal goals; writing a mission statement; becoming an effective communicator; creating a patient referral program; managing time efficiently; staying informed in the profession; and being persistent.
