Seizures result from electrical currents in the brain. Seizures are diagnosed by episodes and by EEG's. There is no need to try and prevent seizures if you have never had any symptoms of them. Once you have had symptoms it is important to do all you can to prevent having further seizures.
Instructions
1. Get on a medication regiment. Medications are used to prevent further seizures. The drugs must have time to build up in the patients blood so they may take up to two weeks to become effective. If one medication is not preventing the seizures on it's own, more will be ordered. This is the most common way to treat seizures.
2. Try the ketogenic diet. This diet is high in fiber and low in protein. It is a strict diet that when on one must not stray off of the diet for even one meal. It has been proven effective in 50% of the children diagnosed with seizures. It requires a stay in the hospital and then management at home. Staying on this diet can prevent seizures from occurring.
3. Have surgery. This is a last resort at preventing seizures. It is a dangerous operation that must be preformed at a medical center verses a hospital. The surgery removes the part of the brain that is causing the seizures. It is not always successful and it can affect speech, eyesight, and memory.
4. Schedule routine check-ups with your neurologist. The neurologist can order routing EEG's to see if the seizures are staying under control. This will give the neurologist an idea of how much medication is needed and whether it should be increased or decreased.
