Ms Symptoms In Men

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disease that affects the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, optic nerves). The body attacks the myelin, the fatty sheath that protects the nerve fibers. The resulting scar tissue is called sclerosis. Symptoms can be unpredictable and vary greatly from person to person, though men and women tend to have the same general symptoms.

Initial MS Symptoms in Men

The first symptom usually found in men with MS is tingling or weakness in extremities or numbness of the extremities (arms and legs). Others may first experience sudden vision changes, such as double vision, poor contrast, eye pain or heavy blurring.

Common Physical Effects

Common symptoms of MS in men include difficulty with gait, coordination and balance, including dizziness and vertigo. Dysfunction may occur in the bladder or bowels, including constipation and diarrhea. Muscles may become tight or spasm. Chronic, clinical pain is also common.

Effects of MS on Sexual Function

Men with MS often suffer from erectile dysfunction, reduced penile sensation, difficulty ejaculating and loss of libido. Fatigue and depression also can affect sexual functioning.

Cognitive and Emotional Effects

Men with MS often have difficulty with cognitive functions. They may develop mood swings and often suffer from severe depression.

Less Common Effects

Less common symptoms of MS in men include difficulties with speech, breathing and swallowing. Rarely, men may experience headache, hearing loss and seizures. Occasionally abnormal sensations such as itching and stabbing pains occur.
