Some urinary tract infections require treatment with oral medication.
The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, the bladder and the ureters. Bacteria, viruses, fungi and even parasites sometimes cause infections in this system. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can affect some or all of these organs, with some symptoms being noticeable in the abdominal and genital areas. Yeast infections occur when a fungus that normally lives in the body, such as Candida albicans, grows more abundantly than usual because of conditions especially favorable to its growth. Some of the symptoms of vaginal yeast infections occur in the same area as the symptoms of a UTI, but the two conditions are not related.
UTI Signs and Symptoms in Younger Adults
Both men and women can experience a UTI although the condition is more common in women. A woman's shorter urethra makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder. Not everyone who has a UTI will experience symptoms, but most will. Common symptoms of lower UTI include: an urgent need to urinate; frequent but light urination; a burning sensation when urinating; pain or pressure in the lower back or abdomen; bloody, cloudy or strong smelling urine; and, in men, discharge from the penis. Severe or persistent symptoms, combined with fever, chills or nausea, could be a sign of a bladder infection.
UTI Signs and Symptoms in Older Adults
Seniors may experience some of the same symptoms of a UTI as younger adults, but many do not. They may also have symptoms that younger adults do not exhibit, such as mental confusion, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cough and shortness of breath.
UTI Signs and Symptoms in Children
Young children can show UTI symptoms different from those of adults. These symptoms may include: a high fever that persists, sometimes accompanied by listlessness and lack of interest in food; painful urination; cloudy or very bad smelling urine; abdominal pain; vomiting; and loss of bladder control.
Yeast Infection Signs and Symptoms
Yeast infections are common and not life-threatening although frequent yeast infections could indicate the presence of a more serious condition. Among the signs of a yeast infection are: itching, redness or swelling in the vaginal area; unusual vaginal discharge; and pain with urination or intercourse. Although yeast infections are not sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), men can get yeast infections from intercourse with an infected partner. Symptoms in men include a rash or itching on the penis.
