Beginning Education
If you are interested in becoming a chiropractor, you will have to complete the beginning educational requirements. This includes graduating from high school or obtaining a GED and then going on to college. While you are at college, you need to study subjects like anatomy, physiology, biology and physics. You will need to graduate with a bachelor's degree in the area of your choice. In some cases, you may be able to move on to chiropractic college with only 90 credit hours, but most chiropractors go ahead and get a bachelor's degree.
Chiropractic School
After you graduate, the next part of the process is attending chiropractic school. Getting into chiropractic school can be difficult because there is a great deal of competition. There are only a few chiropractic schools in the country and there are many people trying to get into them. This program takes another four years to complete and once you graduate, you will have a doctor of chiropractic degree. You will learn in the classroom and working as an intern in a clinical setting.
Certification
After you graduate from chiropractic college, you will need to obtain the proper certification and licensing before you can practice. Every state has a specific licensing requirement when it comes to allowing chiropractors to practice. To become certified, you will have to pass a licensing exam in your state. Many states use an exam that is administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Once you pass the exam, you will be able to practice as a chiropractor in your own practice or work for someone else.
Getting Started
After you complete your education and obtain your license, you can begin working as a chiropractor. At this point, you have to decide whether you want to open your own chiropractic practice or work for someone else. You could possibly apply and get a job at a chiropractic clinic. With this type of job, you will usually get benefits, but your income will be limited. By opening your own practice, you can grow your customer base and grow your income over time.
