What Does Ephedrine Do To Your Body

Acts as a Stimulant

Ephedrine is actually a central nervous system stimulant that can be used to treat breathing problems, nasal congestion and low blood pressure problems. It has also been used to treat sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and menstrual or urine control problems. It functions much like adrenaline does by increasing the heart rate and blood pressure, narrowing blood vessels and opening up the lungs.

Treats Breathing Problems

Ephedrine has long been used to treat certain types of breathing problems, including asthma and nasal swelling or congestion caused by allergies and colds. It acts as a decongestant and broncho-dilator by reducing swelling and constricting of the blood vessels in the nasal passages. It also helps to widen the airways to make breathing easier.

Side Effects

While it can be effective in treating breathing problems, ephedrine does come with a number of side effects. A person taking ephedrine may experience nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, headache, nausea, loss of appetite or trouble sleeping. Some serious side effects include chest pain, irregular heart beat, sweating, shaking, vomiting, weight loss, stomach pain and painful urination. If you experience these side effects while on the drug, see your doctor right away.

Misuse

Because of ephedrine's ability to act as adrenaline does, many people misuse it as an appetite suppressant or concentration aid. Ephedrine should never be used to lose weight or build body mass. Nor should it be used to help with concentration. Misusing ephedrine can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks, seizures, strokes and mental disorders.
