Hot Stones Used In Reflexology

Hot Stones Used in Reflexology

With over 7,200 nerve endings in each foot, it is no wonder that sore feet feel so much better after a therapeutic reflexology session. A practitioner applies pressure and movement to specific areas on the foot to massage the reflexology points. Incorporating hot stones into a reflexology session is more effective and relaxing than using hands alone.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is an alternative therapeutic technique based on the belief that your feet mirror your body and pressure applied to particular areas of the feet promote balance and healing in the corresponding part of your body. For example, the head and neck area are found on the top, sides and back of the big toe. Applying pressure to these reflex points can help unblock energy and stimulate energy channels along these pathways.

What Are Hot Stones?

Hot stones are used to complement and improve a reflexology session. They are volcanic basalt formed by cooled molten lava. Because of their high concentration of iron, titanium and magnesium, they are able to retain heat for a long time. These stones are smooth and dark gray in color. River rocks are sometimes used for their smoothness but are not able to retain heat like the basalt stones.

How Are the Stones Heated?

The stones are heated in a special water spa heating unit to a temperature of 110 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The practitioner will always handle the stones first to make sure they are not too hot to place on your feet. Sometimes smaller stones will be placed between the toes.

How Are Hot Stones Incorporated Into Reflexology?

Hot stones are used to enhance a traditional reflexology session. A reflexologist will use the hot stones to apply pressure to reflex points on the ankles and feet. Using hot stones enables the practitioner to open up reflex points more effectively. The heat penetrates the muscles and relaxes the feet, enabling her to access the reflex points better and with more accuracy.
