Reasons For Sudden Hair Loss In Women

Many women experience hair loss with age, hormonal changes and genetic disposition. Most hair loss in women is a slow process. When a woman experiences sudden or unexplained hair loss over a short period of time, a doctor should be consulted to check for health or external causes.

Dietary Deficiencies

Diets low in protein and other minerals may cause hair loss. Women who lose a lot of weight rapidly often notice thinning hair. Conversely, high doses of vitamin A have also been linked to sudden hair loss.

Hormonal Changes

Most hair loss associated with hormones is a slow process. But, women who have recently given birth may notice sudden hair loss. Sudden hair loss due to hormonal changes may be a sign of thyroid disease as well.

Diseases and Infections

Some diseases and infection can cause sudden hair loss in women. Ringworm on the scalp often results in small patches of baldness, itching and redness. Diseases that affect the immune system such as lupus also cause hair loss.

Pulling

Individuals may suffer from compulsive hair pulling, or trichotillomania. Women who suffer from trichotillomania may not be aware of the pulling. The condition can affect both adults and children. It is often diagnosed when there is no other health- or chemical-related problems associated with sudden hair loss.

Chemicals and Overstyling

Repeated use of harsh chemicals on hair may cause hair loss. Hair loss due to chemicals will usually correct over time, but in some cases the hair follicle may be damaged, resulting in long-term hair loss. Women who use styling tools that pull, heat and otherwise stress hair may experience sudden and temporary hair loss.
