Homemade Toothpaste For Children

Toothpaste is believed to be invented in Egypt centuries ago. Toothpaste is placed on a toothbrush and is used to clean teeth and gums and helps prevent cavities. There are many different varieties of toothpaste for children including liquid gels and toothpaste that contains sparkles. However, toothpaste can contain additives such as a non-sugar sweetener called Xylitol, that parents may feel is unhealthy. Parents can easily make toothpaste at home for their children.

Basic Toothpaste

A toothpaste for children can easily be made by combining 1 teaspoon of tooth powder and ¼ teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. This mixture makes enough to be used in one brushing and should be used as soon as possible. Many drugs stores carry both tooth powder and hydrogen peroxide.

Peppermint Toothpaste

To make peppermint toothpaste at home for children, mix 1 teaspoon of ground sage, ¼ cup of arrow root and powdered orris root in a bowl. Then add ¼ teaspoon of peppermint oil and spearmint. Add approximately ¼ cup of water. More or less water can be added to make the toothpaste the desired consistency. These ingredients can be found at most health food stores.

Vanilla Toothpaste

Vanilla toothpaste can be made at home for children by combining several ingredients. You will need a teaspoon of vanilla extract, 4 teaspoons of baking soda and a teaspoon of salt. A teaspoon or two of water may be added if desired. Place all of the ingredients into a container and mix. Cover the container with a lid that is air-tight when finished mixing. These ingredients can be located on the baking aisle of a local grocery store.

Orange Toothpaste

To make orange-flavored toothpaste, place 2 tablespoons of dried orange rind in a blender and grind until their consistency is powdery. Then add ¼ cup of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of salt. Grind for a few seconds until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Add a couple of teaspoons of water to make a toothpaste-like consistency. Store in a sealed plastic bag or a jar with a lid. To purchase these ingredients, visit a local grocery or health food store.

Cinnamon Toothpaste

Cinnamon toothpaste can be made at home by mixing ½ cup of tooth powder, 3 teaspoons of glycerin and 15 drops of cinnamon extract. Food coloring may be added, but adding too much can stain the teeth. Add the desired amount of water and store in a container that is air tight. Most local health food stores sell these ingredients.
