Pain Relief For Inflamed Gums

Swelling or inflammation of the gums may be caused by poor oral and dental hygiene. It can also be symptomatic of underlying conditions such as gingivitis, periodontitis, allergies, and other gum infections. Regardless of the underlying cause, there is often significant pain associated with gum inflammation, especially when eating. Fortunately, pain relief is available.


Dental Treatment


To relieve pain and reduce inflammation, your teeth should be professionally cleaned by your dentist. This involves various devices and techniques that will help free your teeth from deposits. Professional teeth cleaning is recommended at least twice a year.


Good oral hygiene is crucial after teeth cleaning. Having a clean mouth is the first step in treating your inflamed gums and naturally, will also relieve the pain associated with the inflammation. Your dentist will instruct you on the proper way of flossing and brushing your teeth. You may also be advised to use antibacterial mouthwashes or gargling solutions that will help you achieve optimum oral health.








It is recommended that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing (at least twice per day), floss your teeth regularly, gargle after each of your meals, and drink lots of fluids.


Homemade Mouthwash


To make a soothing homemade mouth rinse, mix 50 g of rose flower essence with a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Just like any other mouth rinse, place it in your mouth and leave it there for as long as you can, then spit it out. Rinse your mouth with this solution three to four times a day to help relieve pain and restore your gums' health.








Another variant of a mouth rinse makes use of bark from a babul tree that is boiled in water until it the water is reduced. Cool the mixture and use as a gargling solution. This soothes the gums and alleviates pain.


Home Gels and Pastes


If you prefer to apply creams or gels on your gums, try mixing some salt with ginger to create a paste. Rub the paste gently on your gums several times throughout the day. The ginger's anti-inflammatory properties will help reduce the swelling of your gums and relieve pain.


Another alternative involves crushing alum with a mortar and pestle to make a fine powder. Apply this gently to your gums once a day. This also helps reduce swelling.


Mix camphor with castor oil to create a paste. Apply this paste on the gums with light pressure. Do this twice a day, morning and night. This is a good remedy for treating inflammation in the gums and can make you mouth feel better as well.
