Postbaby Diets

Losing pounds after pregnancy can be done with diet and exercise.

Shedding pounds after having a baby can be stressful and a bit difficult. However, allow your body to fully recover from having the baby before putting too much stress on it. If you are breastfeeding, doctors may recommend that you wait until your baby is at least two months old before dieting or exercising.

Breakfast

Breakfast foods should be kept light. Have a yogurt or a banana and oatmeal mixed in a bowl. For other days of the week, your diet should contain whole grain bread, raisin yogurt oatmeal and a fruit of your choice such as kiwi, oranges or strawberries.

Lunch

Lunch should contain grilled foods or sandwiches with lean meats such as fish or chicken. Stay away from fried foods which contain fat and heavy salt. Choose a type of salad that you like to go along with your grilled chicken or fish. Sandwich choices should contain whole wheat bread and chicken breast or lean turkey.

Dinner

For dinner, a variety of things can be eaten. However, keep it light. Spinach soup, vegetable soup, pork fillet, chicken soup or grilled chicken fillet are some options, but again, keep it light and grilled or baked. Keep your diet menu fresh by choosing foods from the grocery store such as fresh lettuce, carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers for a small veggie salad. Have either baked chicken or salmon with the salad to balance out the meal. Don't deprive yourself of food. Dieting is supposed to cut out processed foods, not starving yourself. Eat dinner as early as six or seven so that your body can burn the meal off while you are still active.

Snacks

Snacks should be eaten in between meals and could be raw nuts, fruits such as apples, oranges, kiwi and blueberries, vegetables such as celery, carrots or broccoli or a yogurt with frozen blueberries. Blueberries are an excellent source of vitamin c, dietary fiber and manganese.

Exercise

Along with dieting, exercise can help to shed excess baby weight. Walk off meals with a stroll in the park or a light jog. Keeping active is a key to losing weight. To tone your body's muscles, do squats, crunches and go running.
