Give An Oriental Foot Massage

Oriental foot massage incorporates reflexology to improve the body's functioning.

Oriental foot massage, or foot reflexology, dates back to early China during the Tang Dynasty, from 616 to 907 A.D. Oriental foot massage incorporates direct pressure on different areas on the soles of the feet that correspond to internal organs, which in turn stimulates and increases the function of the internal organs. Foot reflexology massage can also boost blood circulation and reduce stress and pain. Recipients of a foot massage are encouraged to wait until an hour after eating before having a massage and to drink plenty of water after the massage to encourage the elimination of toxins from the body.

Instructions

1. Wash hands thoroughly and have the massage recipient soak their feet in a basin of warm water for 10 to 15 minutes to soften and cleanse the feet.

2. Remove the feet from the water and dry with a soft towel.

3. Place one foot on your lap and hold it in both hands to warm the foot. Place a few drops of oil on your hands and rub together.

4. Hold the foot with both hands and begin to rub the sole of the foot with both thumbs in a firm, circular pattern. Move thumbs in the same direction. Start at the heel of the foot and slowly move your way up the foot until you reach the toes. Be sure to massage the sides of the feet as well.

5. Hold the foot in one hand and the ankle in the other hand and gently rotate the foot in one direction and then the other direction five times. Roll at the ankle and repeat rolling the foot with one hand holding the ball of the foot. Repeat both directions five times.

6. Make a fist and press the knuckles against the heel of the foot. Roll the knuckles in a firm motion across the foot and work your way up the foot until you reach the toes. Remember to roll the knuckles along the sides of the feet.

7. Starting with the little toe, gently pull at each toe with a tugging motion. Gently squeeze the bottom of each toe. Return hands to the soles of the feet and push the fingers into the sole of the foot. Use gentle but firm pressure. Start at the heel and work your way up to the toes.

8. Gently stroke the entire foot with the fingertips and then return the foot to the ground. Pick up the other foot and repeat steps 3 through 7.
