Although scientists are unable to confirm why it works, acupuncture may be able to help relieve pain and many other medical ailments. It is much harder to find an acupuncture doctor than a regular physician, as there are far fewer of them and they often work in private clinics. 1. Firstly, check the yellow pages in your local phone book for acupuncture practices in your immediate area. Start by looking under "Acupuncturists." If you are unable to find a doctor under that heading check "Alternative medicine" and "Chinese medicine."


2. Check listings and advertisements in local newspapers and magazines. Very often acupuncture doctors will advertise in these. Also check listings in national health and wellness magazines, as large practices will often place advertisements in these.


3. Check your local neighborhood coffee shops, gyms and health food stores. Acupuncture doctors often leave business cards or post ads in these local businesses.


4. Try word-of-mouth. Ask friends, family and colleagues if they can recommend an acupuncture doctor.


5. Search online. Type "acupuncture" and the name of your town into the search field of any Internet search engine. Also search Craigslist under "Services" and the subheading "Therapeutic."


6. Go to the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (nccaom.org) and look for doctors in your area.
