Properties Of Sardonyx

The gemstone sardonyx is formed hydrothermally inside a rock. It has been extracted since antiquity and used as a decorative stone in armor and rituals. The stone is not only beautiful but is believed to have healing properties that affect the person wearing it or holding it in her hand.

Appearance

Sardonyx can have a different appearance depending on its cut and mining methods. Two colors and designs prevail. A difference in color implies a difference in healing properties. Gemstones often are dyed to accommodate jewelry design. Dying sardonyx is thought to change the metaphysical properties of the stone. The stone can be black and white with symmetrical stripes or red and white with stripes. Black stones often appear with white splotches. In jewelry, sardonyx may appear completely white with red streaks. Red stones are usually striped with white and are referred to as Red Bull's Eye.

Scientific Properties

Sardonyx belongs to the quartz group of mineral oxides. The mineral classification for the stone is microcyrstalline quartz or banded chalcedony. The gems form from iron, carbon and oxygen inside rock. Its chemical composition is SiO2.

Metaphysical Properties

Sardonyx is believed to strengthen willpower and charisma. Its red and white color has a powerful effect on an individual's charismatic pull, hence the name Red Bull's Eye. The stone is associated with justice and virtue which match it with people in law enforcement. Sardonyx affects the physical body by assisting with digestion and the movement of bodily fluids. Its physical affects are harnessed by placing the stone on the stomach of a person suffering from constipation or problems with fluid metabolism.
