Different Essential Oils

Rosewater is another popular essential oil.

Essential oils are the essence of some kind of plant, extracted by distillation most commonly and bottled for use. Many essential oils have been used throughout history as folk remedy for many different conditions, but more recently essential oils have been used in different ways as part of aromatherapy treatments. Among the most popular essential oils in modern use are sweet orange, mint, peppermint, and cedar wood.

Orange Blossom Essential Oil

Orange blossom essential oils are the most popular essential oil. This is in part because the oil is often produced as a byproduct of other parts of the citrus industry and is very cheap to manufacture as a result. Orange blossom essential oil is also popular as an ingredient in many Arab dishes and several of the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It has also been shown to have antibacterial properties.

Mint Essential Oil

Mint is another very popular essential oil. Like orange blossom essential oil it is made from a food plant and so at least some of its popularity is due to it being used in various food dishes. Mint and mint essential oils are also commonly administered as a treatment for digestive problems. Essential oils are a popular treatment for many such persistent but non-serious conditions that would not warrant over-the-counter medication.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oils are similar to mint essential oils in many ways. Similar to mint, peppermint also helps with digestive problems and has been studied for its positive effects on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Studies in the last few years have shown it to be effective for reducing IBS symptoms, and it might be that peppermint essential oils could have a similar effect if extracted and administered in a proper way.

Cedar Wood Essential Oil

Cedar wood essential oil is another popular oil, though it is different from the other three essential oils above in that it is made from the wood or possibly bark of a cedar tree, rather than the flowers or leaves. The cedar tree was and still is a highly prized resource for many indigenous peoples in North America, Europe and Asia. The essential oil is most often used as a treatment for a variety of skin conditions and irritations.
