Use Ultrasound At Home

Ultrasound is a popular method used in physical therapy that utilizes high frequency sound waves to specific body regions. An ultrasound unit will generate heat deep into muscle tissues and break up minor calcification and bruises by creating small vibrations in the areas, increasing oxygen and nutrients and reducing swelling. Home ultrasound units are becoming popular to help patients reduce pain and improve the healing process.

Instructions

1. Remove any clothing or bandaging surrounding the injured area that would impede the sound waves from penetrating into the afflicted area.

2. Apply the hypo-allergenic gel generously to the area you will be administering the treatment to. If the area is not easily accessible, such as your back, ask a friend or family member for assistance. You want enough gel to cover an area slightly larger than the injury. The gel prevents friction from slowing the procedure down or chaffing the skin.

3. Apply topical anti-inflammatory cream to the site. Follow the manufacturer's label to use an appropriate amount. The heat of the ultrasound will help penetrate the cream deep into the injured area to reduce swelling.

4. Turn on the ultrasound machine and place the round-headed probe on the gel.

5. Work the probe in circular motions. You don't need to press down on the probe to get the desired result. Simply making contact with the skin and maintaining continuous circular motions will increase blood flow, remove waste and improve nutrient delivery to the injured area.

6. Continue the therapy for five to 1o minutes. Turn the machine off and wipe the gel away from the skin with a clean towel. Wipe down the probe head with a clean towel before putting it away.
