Detecting the signs and symptoms of diabetes in infants may prove difficult due to the fact that infants cannot communicate their feelings effectively enough to the parent except for crying. However, there are some noticable symptoms that appear frequently in, and are common to, diabetic infants. On detecting these certain symptoms, an appointment with the infant's pediatrician will be required.
Identification
An excessive thirst that cannot be quenched may be present in your infant along with excessive urination. Your may notice your infant is sleepy most of the time and that when he's awake he is extremely hungry. These are definite signs and symptoms of diabetes in your infant and should be checked. A dark, velvety rash may be apparent on the back of the infant's neck. You may notice the slow healing of sores on your infant's body.
Time Frame
The pediatrician will order blood tests and perform a simple urine test at his office. Blood will be drawn by the doctor's phlebotomist and sent away for examination and testing. Positive results will determine your infant's treatment.
Types
Type 1 diabetes is most commonly seen in infants and children, where the beta cells in the pancreas no longer make insulin as the body's immune system has turned against and destroyed them. This type will require daily insulin shots for normal existence. Type 2 diabetes is a type of insulin resistance affecting fat, liver and muscle tissue being unable to process insulin. The pancreas no longer keeps up with the release of insulin when food is consumed.
Benefits
Victims of diabetes may want to get more exercise, watch sugar and other caloric intake on a daily basis, get regular blood pressure checks, take their medicine (including a daily aspirin) and test their sugar levels every day.
Warning
The onset of Type 1 diabetes is rapid. Seeing a sudden change in the daily intake and output habits of your infant is cause for concern. Book an appointment with your infant's pediatrician at once.
