Hyssop is a shrub similar to mint. Its name is derived from the Hebrew word "ezov," or "holy herb." It is native to the Mediterranean region and is mentioned frequently in the Bible, where it is noted for its ability to cleanse and purify. It also grows in the Himalayas, and its essential oil is used in ayurvedic medicine to relax the nervous system when under stress. It is more widely used in massage and aromatherapy for its antiseptic qualities.
Instructions
1. Mix a few drops of hyssop oil with a carrier like jojoba, almond or sunflower oil and massage into aching areas.
2. Massage hyssop oil into pressure points on the feet to treat viral illnesses using reflexology.
3. Mix 10 drops of hyssop oil with 20 ml almond or sunflower oil and massage onto your chest to treat bronchitis and colds; add thyme or eucalyptus oil for extra potency. You also can use hyssop oil in a nebulizing diffuser to alleviate respiratory illnesses.
4. Add a few drops of hyssop oil to your bath as aromatherapy for lightening your mood or easing grief. Hyssop oil smells sweet, spicy and slightly camphorous. You also can use it as an aromatherapy treatment for rheumatism, bruises, sores, earache, toothache, and high blood pressure.
5. Apply hyssop oil directly to cold sores, as hyssop oil is thought to have antiviral properties. It is also thought to help speed healing of bruises, so you can either apply the oil directly on the affected area or put a few drops on a cold compress and hold it on the bruise.
